Media Evaluation
A2 Advanced Portfolio in Media Evaluation
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms of conventions of real media products?
In a typical Rock music video it normally consists of the band performing the song in practise, in locations or in front a live audience but some times they can be narrative and performance based videos. Within the music video the bands logo may pop up during the video and fans of the band identify the logo and the costumes that the artists wear suit the genre of music. The most prominent props within the video are the instruments and mostly the guitar along with the guitarist and the way the band are layered out is normally the singer at the front with the guitarist on the side, the bassist a bit more in the background to the side and the drummer at the back.
In my music video I have kept to these conventions of a rock music video. The entire video except some bits are all performance based with the band playing to the camera in a certain location and with most rock music videos the band perform in front of the camera and have different camera angles showing all of the band and then individual members focussing on them and even though may video only has a few different camera angles I did show every member of the band play their instrument/sing individually whereas if you were to look at a RnB music video then it would be mostly of the singer and not that much of the band singing in a recording studio or by themselves and only focussing on them.
There isn’t a relationship between the because the video is performance based so there doesnt need to be a relationship between the lyrics whereas if the video was narrative putting in images that relate to the lyrics would of been more appropriate and easier to fit into the music video and still keep the continuity.
The Mise-en-scene within the music video meets some of the conventions of a rock music video because I feel that the clothes that the members use are in line with what rock musicians would wear when performing or practising the song, the instruments meet the conventions, the location of the video doesn’t really meet with what you would normally associate with rock music videos and thats where the video lacks.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
The main product was to create a music video for your chosen song and for the ancillary texts I decided to create a digital pack and a promotional poster. The digi-pak is the case of the CD showing the album cover, two inside covers and the back cover. The promotional poster is to promote the release of the album and the artist, I had to design and create the digi-pak and poster myself using images that i had taken myself and make sure that the digi-pak and poster linked well with the video.
Digital Pack
This is the final design for my digi-pak. I decided to go with black and white because i believe that it suits the song that I choose (U2 - Beautiful Day) because the song is about not caring about what you do in life all that matter is that you have fun doing what you do so I thought that I would use black and white so thats its almost the opposite of what a beautiful day is I think that, that worked really well. The front cover shows the band with two facing forwards and two facing backwards but alternate and i think that effect worked really well to suit the genre of music, it also includes the bands name and the title of the album, the back cover is very similar to the front cover because it has the same pose but the people are facing different ways now showing the other two members and also includes the the titles of the songs included on the album as well as the record label logo and barcode. I decided to use that particular font because I thought that it suited the style of genre and the sytle of the album itself. The inside left of the album shows that band getting ready to perform the song so it shows the band getting ready in the location of the video itself. The inside right of the album shows only the lead singers face and during the video when it shows the singer it only includes his face so there is that link and because that is where the cd will go i think that image is the best for that place.
Magazine Advert
This is the final design for my promo-poster and stayed with the same style as the digi-pak to keep continuity throughout the ancillary texts. The poster includes the name of the band and the title of the album and at the bottom says ‘On sale now’, in the left-hand-side corner has the official website name and on the right-hand-side the name of the record company(Abstract Records) and the logo, like the digi-pak staying with the same font to keep the continuity.
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
For my audience feedback I posted my video on Youtube to make sure that the video was open to a wide market and I also posted it on Facebook and also asked a variety of people differing in age and tastes in music as well as knowledge within media, some of the people I asked had also created their own video so it was good to get their feedback on my video, the overall feedback of the video is that it was good but could of been better and gave me a chance to see what was good and what could of been improved for future knowledge. I used a questionnaire to get the feedback, Does the video suit the music genre, Did you like/dislike the video if so why Rate 1-10, Was the lip syncing good Rate 1-10, Were the camera angles/mise-en-scene acceptable if so why rate 1-10, Use of technology and editing skills rate 1-10, What would you change and Overall rating 1-10
Singers feedback
The singer’s (Billy Redmond) feedback was mostly positive but with some negatives that could of been of improved which means that he liked what he was in. The positive side was that he liked the lip-syncing but that may be biased as he was the singer and did the best of his abilities whereas if you look at other feedback people have said that the lip syncing was could but could of been better in the band shots and not in the close-ups of the singer. he found that there was enough camera angles and that the mise-en-scene within the video was good. The negative side was that the video was a little shaky and that what he would of changed was the setting of the video.
Media Students feedback
The feedback that I received from the media students is that one example is that the video does suit the music genre but because the background was at night the video didnt suit the song so it worked but generally but not with the song itself and this was something that many people brought up about the continuity of the video didn’t fit too well. Another thing that was brought up was that the camera angles were sufficient but their should of been more and sometimes that the camera moved around and wasn’t so static.
General feedback
What most of the feedback that i received said was that the video suited the genre, most people liked the video because it was ‘simple but effective.’, the lip syncing was good all round except so bits, the thing that most people would of changed was either more camera angles more flowing or the setting of the video but the average rating was 7 out of 10 making it seem like that the video wasn’t bad.
I have learned for future reference from this constructive feedback was that the main two problems with the video was the camera angles and movement and the setting of the video so in future i would make sure that I filmed more using more camera angles and tryed to
introduce some movement and also that I should plan better where I am going to film the video making sure that it fits withe the genre and with the song itself. Lip syncing was a minor issue so i would make sure that when there was a band shot that the lip syncing was a little better other than this most people found the video to be watchable and good.
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Throughout the entire project of creating the music video and creating of the digital pack and promo poster and the research and planning stages of the project i have used a variety of different media technologies to assist me throughout each stage and without these technologies the completion of my project would of been a lot more difficult because the played a huge role within the coursework.
Macs
The macs were the biggest help because I used the macs and imovie to help edit the music video having over 40 minutes of footage and then having to cut that down to 4 minutes and with the help of imovie the editing stage would of been extremely difficult and the editing stage would of taken a lot longer than it did. I also used final cut express to help with some of the effects that I used within the video like the effect that I used which was that the start of the video started of in black and white and throughout the video more and more colour started to come in and at the end of the video it would been normal colour and i think that this was a good effect and suited the video because the song is Beautiful day so throughout the video the video gets more beautiful linking the video and song together.
Internet/Blog/Websites
The internet has played a huge role within the research and planning stages of the project because most of the research that I conducted was online, researching up conventions of music videos, tutorials for Imovie and final cut express, information about the genre I chose, looking up digi-paks and posters the conventions of these and what should be included on them as well as examples to help me plan what would go onto them, using other peoples examples from past students and use their knowledge so that my coursework to the best of my ability, researching the song and the band that I had chosen.
The blog/websites were helpful because with the blog everything that I had done was uploaded onto the blog as evidence of my coursework with included music genre research, digi-pak research, magazine advert research, media theorists research, music treatments, music video analysis, risk assessment of the video, shooting schedule, animatic, digi-pak, advert and music video and the blog became almost like a diary of what I had done throughout the project. I used Wix the free online website creator because i wanted to show my work in a different format that usual and opened up different ways that I could format and present my work aswell as making sure that I had presented my work in different mediums so that I had a variety work.
For the shooting of the music video I used my own camera as well as location shots and images used on the digi-pak and advert. I found that I could of gotten more shots for the video so that the video would of been better. The camera was the most important media technology that I used because it was the only device that I could of used to capture the footage that I wanted for the video.
